실리콘밸리에서의 3주

좋은 기회를 얻어 경북대학교에서 지원을 받아 3주간 미국 실리콘밸리에서 다양한 활동을 경험할 수 있는 연수 프로그램에 참여하게 되었습니다.

이번 여정에서 2026 CES, UKF 82 Summit, HAI, K-PAI 세미나 등 여러 기술·산업 관련 행사에 참석하고, 미국 현지에서의 생활을 직접 경험했습니다. 이를 통해 IT 기술의 중심지라 불리는 실리콘밸리가 학부생의 시선에서 어떤 공간으로 느껴졌는지, 그리고 그 안에서 마주한 기술·문화·사람들로부터 어떤 인상을 받았는지 써 내려가 보고자 합니다.

실리콘밸리란?

"네트워킹을 통해 아이디어가 기회로 확장되는 공간", 실리콘밸리는 지나가다가 우연히 마주친 분이 유명한 회사의 CEO이고, 창업가며, VC이고, 엔지니어였습니다. 대부분의 사람들은 자신의 분야와 배경을 넘어 적극적으로 네트워킹에 나서고, 함께할 사람을 찾고 아이디어를 공유했습니다. 그 과정에서 각자의 가능성을 현실로 만들기 위해 치열하게 살아가고 있다는 인상을 받았습니다.

세계적으로 유명한 엔지니어와 연구진들이 기술을 개발하고, 이를 CEO와 스타트업 창업가들이 실제 산업과 서비스에 적용하기 위해 직접 현장을 뛰어다니는 모습을 보며, 실리콘밸리는 단순히 기술을 연구하는 공간이 아니라 아이디어가 사람들의 협업을 통해 빠르게 실현되는 공간이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 각자의 역할은 달랐지만, 기술을 현실로 만들겠다는 공통된 목표 아래 유기적으로 연결되어 움직이고 있는 것을 직접 보았습니다.

미국에서의 네트워킹

미국에서의 네트워킹 방식은 한국의 방식과는 확실히 달랐습니다. 사람들은 한 번의 세미나, 잠깐의 마주침만으로도 자연스럽게 LinkedIn을 교환하며, 언젠가 다시 연락할 수 있는 관계를 만들어 나갔습니다. 짧은 만남이라도 그 순간을 인연의 시작으로 여기고, 필요할 때 서로에게 손을 내밀 수 있는 연결고리를 남기는 문화였습니다.

2025년 12월 28일, 미국에 막 도착했을 당시의 저는 이곳에 연고라고는 단 한 명도 없는 사람이었습니다. 낯선 땅, 낯선 환경, 그리고 처음 마주하는 사람들 사이에서 먼저 말을 건다는 것은 결코 쉽지 않은 일이었습니다. 그러나 편재호 교수님께서 다양한 만남의 자리를 마련해 주시고, 여러 세미나와 투자 피칭 행사에 참여할 기회를 주셨습니다. 그 과정에서 많은 사람들을 만날 수 있었습니다.

처음에는 어색하고 조심스러웠지만, 스쳐 지나가는 순간에도 용기를 내어 한마디씩 말을 건네다 보니 어느새 LinkedIn 1촌으로 연결되었고, 간단한 인사와 대화를 주고받는 관계로 이어졌습니다. 그렇게 하나둘 쌓인 작은 연결들이 제게는 큰 자산이 되었습니다.

그 과정에서 윤성희 박사님을 만나게 되었고, 여러 차례의 대화와 교류를 거쳐 박사님께서 운영하시는 K-PAI 커뮤니티의 홈페이지 관리 업무를 함께하게 되었습니다. 단순한 만남으로 시작된 인연이 실제 역할과 책임으로 이어졌다는 점에서, 미국에서의 네트워킹이 지닌 힘을 실감할 수 있었습니다.

‘미국은 기회의 땅이다’라는 말을 막연하게 들어왔지만, 이전까지는 그 기회가 무엇을 의미하는지 명확히 알지 못했습니다. 이번 경험을 통해 제가 느낀 기회란, 거창한 제안이나 특별한 순간이 아니라 낯선 사람에게 먼저 건넨 짧은 인사, 작은 용기에서 시작되는 연결이라는 것이었습니다. 그리고 그 연결이 쌓여 예상하지 못한 기회로 확장된다는 사실을 몸소 체감할 수 있었습니다.

마지막으로

실리콘밸리에서의 3주는 인생의 터닝 포인트라고 부를 수 있을 만큼 값진 시간이었습니다. 많은 사람들을 만났고, 보고, 듣고, 배우며 너무나도 멋진 분들과 인연이 생겼습니다.

이런 경험을 할 수 있도록 직접적으로 도와주신 경북대학교(Kyungpook National University)와 Jae H. Pyeon, 김동균, 남덕윤 교수님, 이외에도 AI 특강을 맡아주신 Sunghee Yun 박사님, ChandraSekar Vuppalapati 교수님 모두에게 감사의 인사를 드립니다.

Three Weeks in Silicon Valley

I was given a valuable opportunity to participate in a three-week training program in Silicon Valley, the United States, where I was able to experience a wide range of activities.

During this journey, I attended several technology and industry related events, including CES 2026, the UKF 82 Summit, HAI, and the K-PAI Seminar, while also experiencing daily life in the U.S. Through these experiences, I would like to reflect on how Silicon Valley is described as the center of IT innovation felt from the perspective of an undergraduate student, and what impressions I gained from the technology, culture, and people I encountered there.

Silicon Valley

“A place where ideas expand into opportunities through networking.” In Silicon Valley, it was common to casually encounter someone who turned out to be a CEO of a well-known company, a startup founder, a venture capitalist, or an engineer. Most people actively engaged in networking beyond their own fields and backgrounds, seeking collaborators and openly sharing ideas. I was deeply impressed by how intensely they pursued turning their individual potential into reality.

Watching engineers and researchers develop technologies, while CEOs and startup founders worked directly in the field to apply those technologies to real industries and services, made me realize that Silicon Valley is not merely a place for technological research. Rather, it is a space where ideas are rapidly transformed into reality through collaboration. Although each person played a different role, they were all organically connected and moving toward a shared goal: bringing technology to life.

Networking in the United States

The networking culture in the United States was clearly different from that of Korea. Even after a single seminar or a brief encounter, people naturally exchanged LinkedIn profiles, creating connections that could be revisited in the future. Even short meetings were treated as the beginning of a relationship, leaving open channels through which people could reach out and support one another when needed.

When I first arrived in the U.S. on December 28, 2025, I did not know a single person there. In an unfamiliar land, environment, and among strangers, initiating conversations was far from easy. However, Professor Jae H. Pyeon kindly arranged various networking opportunities and provided chances to participate in seminars and investment pitching events, which allowed me to meet many people.

At first, I felt awkward and hesitant, but as I gathered the courage to say a few words even in passing moments, those brief interactions gradually turned into LinkedIn connections and simple conversations. Over time, these small connections accumulated and became a valuable asset to me.

Through this process, I met Dr. Sunghee Yun, and after several conversations and exchanges, I began working with him on managing the website for the K-PAI community that he organizes. The fact that a casual encounter developed into a role with real responsibility made me truly realize the power of networking in the United States.

I had often heard the phrase, “The U.S. is a land of opportunity,” but I had never clearly understood what that opportunity meant. Through this experience, I came to realize that opportunity does not begin with grand proposals or extraordinary moments, but with a brief greeting to a stranger and the small courage to initiate a connection. I was able to experience how those connections can grow and expand into unexpected opportunities.

Closing Thoughts

The three weeks I spent in Silicon Valley were so meaningful that I can truly call them a turning point in my life. I met many people, saw, heard, and learned so much, and formed invaluable connections with inspiring individuals.
